Be sure to make a complete game. A lot of developers get 90% done and stop. They skimp on the less glamorous but important features: tutorials, pausing, sound settings, key mappings, or an inviting intro and menu screen. These are important features, and I have seen what would be great games destroyed by the lack of them.
